I AM That Sleeping Beauty

I’ve always been a fan of name changes.
During those days when I had even more Barbies than curls (yes, that’s where he gets it), I informed all the members of my family that I would thence answer only to the name Barbie. For awhile, I was Ariel of The Little Mermaid. Then, Belle of Beauty and the Beast.
Before all of that, though, I was Sleeping Beauty.
That’s why I’m so excited about the most recent production from Tulsa Ballet. This fairy tale, the Disney version and others included, is my favorite of all them all.
The Sleeping Beauty is going to be an especially exciting ballet for several reasons. First, it’s known as one of the most technically challenging ballets there are. Second, it’ll be accompanied by the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, officially the hippest, coolest orchestra ever, playing Tchaikovski. Third, the hunky Marcello Angelini once again brings his expertise as artistic director, using grand staging and sets and lavish costumes in his characteristically fabulous way.
Fourth, someone’s gonna propose right out in front of God and everybody. As in, some nice young person has paid good money to climb on stage, hit one knee and ask for that special someone’s hand in marriage. Judging by the popularity of shows like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, I know you’d practically kill to see a dramatic marriage proposal in the Chapman Hall of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. That’s worth the ticket price on its own, really.
No matter how you dice it, whether you love dance or you’re just looking for a good, prime time-worthy show, The Sleeping Beauty promises to deliver.
All of this is sounding pretty good, right? You’re about to head to the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Web site to buy scads of tickets, right? Before you do, let’s see if you can tell me one thing.

Head to the comments and tell me the fairy tale name you secretly desire was yours. Guys, you know you wish you parents had named you He-Man or Optimus Prime. Ladies, we’ve all wanted to be Aurora or Ariel or Jasmine. Or, maybe you invented your own fairy tale name and you only answer to it when disturbed from a very deep sleep. Now, just days before the most romantic day of the year, is the time to come clean.
This contest will run until Thursday, Feb. 11, at 4pm. I’ll announce the winner before 5pm.

When I was little my fairy tale name was Princess Leia. I had a big fixation with Star Wars when I was little; just as my two boys do now.

Aurora, more affectionately known as sleeping beauty! She is my favorite because She was happy with her ordinary life in the woods, She is innocent, beautiful, and she gets her prince!

I always wanted to be Rapunzel. Maybe that's why I continue to keep my hair long, lol.
I think I felt like her when I was grounded (which was a lot) and I would stare out my window watching all the other kids play, lol.

I fell in love with Gone with the Wind when I was like 10 and insisted everyone call me Scarlett.
I even dressed up as Scarlett to go to school one day in the 3rd grade. It was not Halloween, I just wanted to dress as Scarlett. She was totally my fairy tale heroine.

My favorite fairytale! As a child I was so intrigued by this fairytale. Convinced I was a true princess So I hid a bean under my mattress; slept like a rock! Next day, I placed a doll under my mattress; slept like a rock! …well, needless to say I ended up with a eclectic collection of toys and a tennis ball under my mattress… and my mom wondering what possessed me.

Barbie, I always wanted to be Wonder Woman! I even got to be her one Halloween. When we played make believe- I had a brother and lots of boy cousins so we had to play SuperHeroes, no princes there, LOL! Oh to have Wonder Womans body, strength, speed, hair, etc…Oh wait a minute I am the real life Wonder Woman I'm a Mom! I think I just may have a great blog post going….

My favorite princess from childhood is Snow White. I used to ask my Mom to read it to me every night. I thought she was so beautiful. My daughter even got me a beautiful Snow White cake for my last birthday! I would love tickets to see the ballet as I always love a good princess story!

My favorite Disney movie was The Little Mermaid, hands down. It turned me into "The Little Feminist" for a while. But as you know, with playground games you must fit the part and my hair was not red. For the first time ever in the history of the world, a girl child wished for her hair to be red. My wish didn't come true and my best friend already had gorgeous red hair that reached almost to her knees. And so my best friend was Ariel during kindergarten, but *snap* next year Beauty & the Beast came out and guess who was the only girl in class with brown hair?
Oh. Yeah.

Hi Barbie!!!
Last Wednesday you were the guest speaker for my "Multimodal Communication" class, and I also saw you yesterday at TU's PRSSA meeting!!! Love the blog!
When I was small, I wanted to be referred to as "Beauty" (I'm assuming I meant "Belle"). However, before I wanted to BE a Disney princess, I wanted to MEET one.
During my first trip to Disney world when I was four, my parents awoke late one night to me standing on the hotel balcony outside, staring at the (fake/decorative) lake that it faced, calling out into the darkness, "Ariellllll, ARIELLLLL…MOM I heard her singing…ARIEL!!!!"

Well, I'm getting ready to date myself a little. Mary Poppins. Yep, that's who I wanted to be. I saw the movie for my 7th b-day. Who wouldn't LOVE to fly around all dignified looking, with an umbrella. COOL!!!

I was also one who wanted to be Aurora (and thanks to French class, I was for three years!). I grew up with plans for that to be my baby girl name (should I ever have children) but then, like an evil wizard my brother swept in and named his daughter Aurora. We had never discussed it and when I mentioned it to my mom, she laughed and said she had planned to name her next daughter Aurora if she had a third child. Spooky! All in all, my name was sort of a princess name, so it worked for me.

I loved Belle, she tamed the beast there's gotta be something amazing about possessing that qaulity! No wonder I'm always taking on challenges haha.
Now my 3 year old is into all the fairy tale pincesses, and who does she choose to be, Princess Fiona. It's so funny when people ask her who she's dressed up as. They all have the same look like REALLY, OK lol

Thumbelina. She was so tiny (thumb-sized!) and cute curled up sleeping in flowers! I was in love with the book as a young girl. Sweet memories.

WENDY DARLING! I love her so much. Who doesn't love hanging out with a bunch of boys pretending to be the mother hen. Flying, pixie dust, pirates, fairies, never EVER wanting to grow up. Actually….now that I think about it, I don't think I've changed too much.

Belle, Beauty and the beast was a great romantic fairy tale, and I loved the grown up version, the TV show Beauty and the Beast, so romantic !

Cinderella! I always identified with her, growing up in poverty, loving animals and wishing for a way to get out of my situation! Now that I'm an adult I DID find my Prince Charming and we've been together for 11 years! He has taught me how to be a positive person and has changed me in so many wonderful ways! We have also worked really hard to be successful in our careers, so I can truly say I have lived a Cinderella story!

What's my princess name? Well, as a child I was called Princess Leia because I had long hair that my mom would put in pigtails, so the kids at school would wrap it into buns on my head and it was instant Princess Leia and we would play Star Wars.
However, throughout the years I had times when I wanted to be every different princess Disney could come up with, from Sleeping Beauty to Snow White to Tinkerbell. But the one that I always really wanted to be was Belle, Beauty and the Beast is certainly my all time favorite Disney movie.

Okay, Barbie.
One of my mom's friends used to call me Goldilocks and I hated it — I'm not even sure why. I think I wanted to be one of the bears.
But I remember climbing a pear tree in our front yard and finger-crocheting a chain until it reached the ground. The game was, my rescuer would climb the crocheted chain, a la Rapunzel. But then I'd unravel it and start over, so my mom called me Penelope.
So my fairy tale name is, um, Conflicted.

For some reason I've always loved Medusa. I know I know – NOT a fairy tale. She was a gorgon and considered a monster but I think she got a bad rap. But don't you just love saying "medusa"…it has a nice ring to it.
