Adventures in Downtown Land: The Southie

Two Bucks on Boston night turned out to be the perfect time for me to leave my Southie lair and head to downtown to not only try a couple restaurants for the first time, but also take my maiden voyage with a certain chocolate spread.

So last week I, The Southie (a phrase coined by all of my midtown Tulsa friends and my pen name here at TDT), ventured to downtown to have some puffy tacos at Elote Cafe, the first half of the Two Bucks on Boston affair, with my friend Carrisa and her lovely sister. The $2 puffy taco meal was delicious, and I was thrilled to hear their emphasis on using local farmers and vendors.

I especially loved the Vegetarian Puffy Taco, which was filled with beans and sweet potatoes.

But I was on a mission.

You see, amongst my Twitter pals lately I’ve noticed a slight obsession with Nutella. I’d never had Nutella before, and honestly, just looking at the jars of it in the grocery stores, it didn’t look appealing. But when perusing the menu at Mod’s Coffee and Crepes (across the street from Elote and the other half of Two Bucks on Boston) I noticed that they offer a crepe stuffed with Nutella and bananas.

So across the street I trotted to check out what all the fuss was about.

Now, when I first got my Nutella-and-banana-stuffed crepe, it looked like any other crepe.

Then I opened it up, and it looked exactly like I had imagined it…bananas covered in poo.

No, really. Doesn’t it just look like I opened up a baby’s diaper and took a picture?

But I bravely moved on and decided to try it anyway. I was a little hesitant.

But I was assured that indeed, I would not be disappointed.

AHHHHH! THE HORROR!

Just kidding. It was good.

Though I’m not quite sure what the fuss is about. I mean, it’s melted chocolate on top of bananas wrapped up in a crepe. The nature of melted chocolate on top of bananas is appealing enough. And crepes speak for themselves.

So…why the Nutella? Is it because it’s already melty? Is it melty chocolate for the lazy consumer?

I don’t know.

But it was yummy.

And it is on sale this week at my local grocery store.

A note from Kelly: This review is NOT sponsored by Nutella. It was sponsored by my curiosity after hearing all the gushing on Twitter about Nutella. It was also sponsored by my stomach, which talks to me regularly about wanting new, delicious food to try.

Oh but it’s not just chocolate, it’s chocolate hazelnut. And that makes all the difference.

Mikey has unlocked the secret. If we want to do baby diaper analogies we could just as easily add guacamole and refried beans to the list. Why do I bring this up? Those of us who like banana and chocolate would appreciate not being grossed out.

Duly noted, Archer. I try to keep my editing of guest bloggers to a minimum, but I have to admit, I think my next Nutella experience won’t be quite as…appetizing as the others.

Sounds good…if you lose the bananas!
