Chicory & Chives Cafe: A Cajun, white-gravy-on-my-fries kind of love.

I hope you’re hungry, Tulsa, because this week’s restaurant post comes from Carrisa, blogger at the Tulsa-based AndSoSheBlogs.com, and she’s got the scoop on the newly relocated Chicory & Chives Cafe. Take it away, Carrisa!
So there’s this not-so-new restaurant called Chicory and Chives. They’ve been hanging out in west Tulsa for awhile now, but no longer! They are now in my neck of the woods. Or, the Southern Hills area, for those of you who don’t know where the neck of my woods is.
I’d read some pretty amazing reviews of Chicory and Chives over at Tulsa Food Blog, but since they weren’t open for dinner, the place kind of fell off my radar.
Then last week I was driving by the London Square shopping center and I saw their sign. I may have squeed.
The sign read: Cajun and Country Cuisine.
Sounded good to me!

Even better? They are now open for dinner. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me. Because yes, my husband and I like to eat out. And we always seem to find ourselves playing that stupid game where we can’t think of where we want to go and we want the other person to pick, but then that doesn’t sound good, either, and lather, rinse, repeat.
Perhaps in time the new will wear off, but as of now, we’ve eaten there three times. In a week. It’s even close enough for us to walk there for dinner. And yes, we do actually walk there. Sometimes. When the weather permits and I’m not being a crankypants.
My husband fell in love with their brown beans. In love as in, take-them-into-a-dark-alley-and-let-whatever-happens-happen in love. I felt similar feelings towards their all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.
Do you know how hard it is to find an a breakfast buffet, Tulsa? Let alone one that doesn’t make you want to hurl?
The scrambled eggs were real and not slimy. The biscuits and gravy were top notch. And someone there knows what they are doing with the bacon because the bin was filled with both bendy and crispy strips. No one walks away unhappy!
Each time we’ve visited, owner Jim Loggin has come over to our table to make sure everything is good and to let us know more about his restaurant. He’s from Lousiana, y’all, so he totally knows about this Cajun cooking thing.
Some of you may be thinking that you don’t like Cajun food. That’s OK. There’s plenty on the menu at Chicory and Chives that’s not Cajun: Burgers, chicken fried steak, pork chops…heck, even a ham-and-cheese sandwich.
If, however, you don’t fear the Cajun and you are looking for some tasty catfish, gumbo, or spicy shrimp, you will not be disappointed.
Right now the place is a bit empty in the evenings. I don’t expect it to stay that way for long, though. The word is spreading fast.
So go now and take advantage of the immediate seating and quick service. And did I mention there’s fried okra on the menu? No?
There’s fried okra on the menu.
C&C also offers daily lunch specials that promise to be on your table, and fast. And the price is so right. There are several dinners on the menu in the $6.99-$7.99 range.
As you do the Cajun chow-down, remember: Support your locally owned Tulsa restaurants.

Your taste buds will thank you.

I visited there last week as well and was inspired to write about my experience: http://www.tulsafoodguy.com/blog/2010/09/chicory-chives-tulsas-home-for-cajun-food/
And I agree, it’s only a matter of time before this place starts filling up for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The Tulsa Blog world seems to be buzzing about Chicory & Chives’ new location.

sounds wonderful ! So, is the okra, the rolled in cornmeal, down home, or is it deep fried in batter?

Pam, it’s not cornmeal, it’s batter. Which I know cornmeal is best, but there are two kinds of okra batter. The kind that’s not good where you can’t see any okra poking through… and the other kind which isn’t as thick and tastes better. This is the better of the two.
can you tell I know my okra?

You must must MUST try the etouffee! And the alligator, and everything else. But first and second choice should be the etouffee. Read my review:

I wish I’d written a piece about this place so I could shamelessly plug it in the comments section.

Must go to Tulsa. Right now. Must eat french fries with gravy. Diet? What diet? In Seattle, whatever! Does Seattle even know you can put gravy on french fries?

Apparently food people (I refuse to call them critics) here in Tulsa don’t know food or are getting paid off to say this place is good. food is terrible and bland. I had there Jambalaya, which was god awful. You’re better off buying Zatarains from walmart and making your own. there was absolutely no flavoring or spiciness to it. C&C is equivalent to hospital food, in the culinary world.
