Fall Break 2010 has descended upon the households of the Tulsa area, and that means one very scary thing: The kids are home.
Uh-oh. Now what?
Not to worry. Whether you’ve gotta work and need to find somewhere to put the kids, if you’re home with them today or if you need an activity list for Grandma, Grandpa or your favorite baby sitter, there’s plenty to do in Tulsa today, Friday and Monday. As heard this morning on the KRMG Morning News with Joe Kelley, here’s the list.
Camps
Gilcrease Museum: Art over Fall Break. Get an intro to the Gilcrease collections and special exhibitions and make a variety of crafts in papier-mache, multimedia weaving, painting, clay, printmaking and drawing. This camp is for kids age 5-11. Thursday-Friday, 9am-4pm. Class fee is $75, or $50 for members. Register by calling (918) 596-2737 – there weren’t many spots in the camp to begin with, so if you want your kid to be part of this, call first thing this morning.
Fall Break Cake Camp. What kid doesn’t love cake? Send your kid to the Fall Break Cake Camp at All Things Cake at 71st and Memorial. The camp is Thursday-Friday, 9am-noon for ages 6-9 and 2-5pm for ages 10-14. Cost is $40 per day and registration is required – visit allthingscakeshop.com.

Fall-Flavored Stuff
OktoberFest Tulsa. I hear from a lot of folks who don’t think OktoberFest Tulsa is a kids’ event, which is sad, because it totally is. Check out the rides at the carnival as well as what’s going on the kids’ then. By the way, kids 12 and under pay nothing at the admission gate, and it’s open all day Thursday and Friday.
Oxley Nature Center. If you’re looking for some outdoor fall fun this fall break, check out the foliage with a hike at Oxley Nature Center. You’re bound to see some wildlife in addition to all those beautiful, colorful, leaves, too. Know what’d be fun? See how many different colors of leaves you and your kids can gather in an after noon at Oxley. 8am-5pm.
Ghost Walks in Bartlesville. This might be just for the older kids on break, but it’d still be fun to head up Highway 75 to see what lurks in the dark shadows of downtown Bartlesville after midnight. You and the fam can take a walking tour of some of downtown Bartlesville’s most historic buildings and hear some ghost stories. Tours start every 20 minutes between 6-9pm, and the cost is $5 per. If you get to Bartlesville early and have some smaller kiddos in tow, be sure to check out the Kiddie Park in Johnstone Park.
Gross Goodies. If your kids enjoy freaking out your friends and family, get them to where they can learn how to serve a meal with worms, vampire veins and monster eggs with in the Gross Goodies cooking class at Whiteside Park, just west of 41st and Yale. It’s for ages 6-12, the cost is $10 and it’s from 1-2pm on Monday.
Tulsa-Area Pumpkin Patches. Halloween is scarily close, and you know what that means – the pumpkin patches here in the Tulsa area are open. Keep in mind that pumpkin patches today aren’t just for pumpkin shopping – they’re full-blown destinations offering everything from pony- and hayrides to a little something called a pumpkin cannon. You can check TashaDoesTulsa.com for a complete list of local pumpkin patches.
Other Stuff
The Big Adventure at Tulsa Historical Society. Tulsa Children’s Museum has this interactive, semi-permanent exhibit at THS right now that puts kids in the middle of a physically and mentally challenging 3-dimensional game board. Each adventure in the exhibit encourages kids’ to explore and investigate as well as to climb, crawl and balance. It’s like a playground without the skinned knees and dirty hands, and with an educational component to boot. THS near Woodward Park on Peoria, 10am-4pm, Thursday-Friday.
Bounce U. Get open bounces at Bounce U at 8922 S. Memorial today at 1:30pm and Friday at 11:30am and 3pm. Kids under 5 can bounce on Friday at 10am, and there’s a cosmic bounce (read: a neon bounce in the dark) set for 8pm Friday night. All bounces are about $7 ($8 for the cosmic bounce) per kid, and be sure your kiddos wear socks.
Kaleidoscope Children’s Museum. Kids get to learn about arts and sciences without ever realizing they’re learning in this hands-on, interactive children’s museum. There’s a pint-sized kid city, two giant rock walls and 13,000 square feet of fun. KCM is open special hours Thursday, Friday and Monday, from 10am-6pm.
Purple Glaze. It’s always fun to make a mess and make some art at Purple Glaze, especially since parents know they don’t have to bother with the clean-up. The bonus is that there’s no studio fee on Mondays and you can make a craft for as little as $6, so put PG on your calendar for the beginning of the week. Locations are at 33rd and Peoria and 91st and Sheridan.
Tulsa Libraries. Not only are there loads of storytimes for a variety of ages and at a variety of times, there’s also Board Game Day at Schusterman-Benson Library today (Thursday) at 3:30pm, a puppet and marionette show at Central Library at 3:30pm and 7pm and a Daring Young Scientist program at the Broken Arrow Library today at 6:30pm. On Monday, check out Books Sandwiched in at noon at Central Library. It’s all free and open to the public, and who knows, you kid might even read a book on his day off.
