Cherry Berry Brookside: What’s Your Recipe for FroYo Greatness?

Cherry Berry Tulsa, Oklahoma

Earlier this month Cherry Berry Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt opened on Brookside, at 3743 S. Peoria Ave. (next door to Fuji Sushi).

Before summer hits and jams this little nook of a dessert bar with Midtowners who fear all that might lie south of 51st Street like the fire of a thousand suns, my little family and I stopped in last night to check it out.

There isn’t much difference between the Brookside location and the one in Broken Arrow, save the oh-so-Midtown concrete flooring and the fact that parking is found in a rear lot so the store can enjoy frontage right on Brookside – a model that I really, really wish the ‘burbs would implement.

I mean, wouldn’t everyone like a better look at some beautiful, lighted store fronts rather than a huge parking lot with the storefront winking at them from a quarter mile away? Wouldn’t that make stopping your car to go in and have a look-see a little less painful? But I digress.

In case you just moved into Tulsa from the sticks since last summer and have no idea what the heck this Cherry Berry stuff is all about, here’s the scoop: The store offers 12 frozen yogurt flavors, some of them fat-free, and over 50 toppings so that froyo lovers can custom-create their own frozen dessert fantasies. It’s all self-serve, taking the power of sweet concoction creation out of the hands of the kids behind the counter and putting them squarely in the hands of the customer.

It’s a wonderful feeling. But sometimes, as readers of the weekly Things To Do In Tulsa This Weekend post here at TDT know, that range of choices feels almost like…too much power. With so many options, it’s difficult sometimes to pick a path and stick to it.

Which is why last night my froyo creation at Cherry Berry went a little something like this (ingredients listed in order of appearance):

-Vanilla frozen yogurt
-An ass-ton of chopped pecans (mostly because I got impatient and turned the knob on the pecan dispenser too far)
-More nuts: This time, chopped walnuts
-Chocolate frozen yogurt, mostly to correct the errant nut-to-froyo ratio
-Reese’s Pieces, my favorite candy on the face of the planet
-Butterfinger crumbles
-Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup chunks
-Mini chocolate chips
-Green and white gummy worms, my second-favorite candy on the face of the planet
-A raspberry, for health and parenting reasons (gotta watch my girlish figure/serve as a good example to my kid and stuff)
-A squirt of chocolate syrup. Not even a squirt, really – more like a squeet.
-A few more Reese’s Pieces

After, as I shoveled this mess into the hole in my face (never mind what it cost), I wondered what kind of capital-C Crazy the TDT readers come up with when they visit self-serve frozen yogurt bars.

So, don’t leave a girl hanging. I must know: What’s your favorite froyo creation, and what do we do at a place like Cherry Berry to whip it up for ourselves?

P.S. – Hey, Cherry Berry? In case you’re reading, do you mind if I make a suggestion? OK: What if you added candied bacon to your array of toppings choices? Just a hunch, but I think it’d be a hit. (Readers, in all of your genius, feel free to add your own toppings suggestions. It’s for fun.)

Our family just tried Cherry Berry for the first time this week…everyone loved it! I was really suprised at the sheer variety of toppings and fro-yo they had available.
I went with something semi sane, Cheesecake yogurt with almonds, and fresh strawberries…at the first bite I just stopped talking to the family and kept on eating! It was that good!
Now my husband & son both loaded up on the chocolate, with all sorts of candy, brownie, and cookie bites added. My son added about a dozen cherries and asked if that counted as a “fruit” for the day…ha-ha, um…NO.

As a side note, the cost wasn’t as bad as I feared…only $13 for 3 decent size servings. And as a happy side note, for everyone who is counting calories, doing a Weight Watching points plan, or just curious; the nutritional stats are easily found on line. Just for the fro-yo however, they guess you can work out the info for the toppings!

I actually really like cereal toppings on my frozen yogurt.
Captain crunch, granola, and fruity pebbles on top of either strawberry or cheesecake flavored fro-yo? Yes please. Also, sometimes certain fro-yo places will have a squeeze bottle of marshmallow goo by the syrups. I like some of that too.

I have now been to Cherry Berry four times and each time, I cannot change my flavor. I mix the Acia berry and pomegranete and put fresh strawberries, blueberries and the little fish egg things that are filled with juice.
I LOVE IT. If you sign up for the frequent visitor program (just give them your phone or email) and they’ll keep a record of how many times you come in and you’ll get 3 oz free every so many visits!

This recipe, which I cannot stand the thought of abandoning to try anything else, is completely FULL of win.

-Tart flavored yogurt (which is amazing, but also fat free)
    -Kiwi
    -Strawberries
    -Blueberries
    -Raspberries
    -A few pieces of waffle

It’s the most heavenly thing in the world AND it’s super healthy, which is a rare combination.
